Bio

My field of expertise is image analysis and studying visual formations. I hold a degree in art and architectural history and continental film studies and I have been working at several Dutch universities since 1984. In 2003 I finished my dissertation (cum laude), a comparative study of seventeenth-century Dutch painting, architecture and literature. This research brought the rich archive of visual knowledge and formal vocabulary to my attention that was generated in early modern Europe and which is still very much alive in our modern culture today, as for instance in movies, docucumentaries, television serials, (press) photography, adverstising, cartoons, et cetera.

Since 2007 I have been developing my 'Trained Eye'-program in public domains given the urgent need to understand the impact of 'visual culture' today in a meticulous way. Especially in public domains in which existential questions are at stake: health & illness, violence & safety, transcendence & religion, urban imagination, et cetera. Within the Dutch IVMV–Foundation (the institute for public imagination, established in December 2009), my ambition as a director is one the one hand to develop a systematic way to analyse images and on the other hand to help organizations in a practical way in understanding the impact of public imagination on their own praxis.

Furthermore, I think Cultural Studies must be deconstructed (De Mare 2010).
